lighten your load

The godly are directed by honesty; the wicked fall beneath their load of sin. (‭Proverbs‬ ‭11‬:‭5‬ NLT)

Honesty is freeing.  If you have ever concealed the truth, bent the truth, or flat out lied…you likely know the weight that it brings.  In the moment there is turmoil of soul as you wrestle with if it will work or not  Will you get away with it?  Will the other party believe you?  Or stop asking questions?  Or at least not ask that question, the one that would force you to reveal the truth?

For some, even that process is wrecking; their stomachs turn the entire time.  For others, that process is a part of the thrill and what drives them to tell more lies.  It’s about the thrill of the sell of a lie and the win of getting away with it.  Whatever the process looks and feels like it all leads to the same place.  You are stuck carrying the weight of deceitfulness and reminded of it every time you are around the people, places, and things involved.  Do it enough and the house of cards will collapse.  The question is whether or not you will collapse first.

Choose honesty.  It’s often just as difficult of a path to take, especially when we’ve made a mistake (intentionally or unintentionally), but the burden you carry through it and after it is significantly different.

With honesty, it’s as if you are taking stones out of your pack as you walk and your load is getting lighter and lighter the further you go.

With dishonesty, it’s as if you are adding stones to your pack as you walk and your burden is getting heavier and heavier the further you go.

When you consider humanity started light and free in the garden, naked and unashamed…it seems odd that we choose to add weight to our souls in the journey of life.  Choose honesty and live in the freedom it brings.
