A prayer of Moses, the man of God. Lord, through all the generations you have been our home! (Psalms 90:1 NLT)
Other translations say He has been “our dwelling place.” I love that. God gave Moses the plans for the tabernacle. The place where God would dwell with His people and make His home. And yet, from Moses perspective, it was us who found our home in Him. God is our home. God is our dwelling place. We know this to be true in Christ, we abide in Him and He in us (John 6:56). Yet, I was struck by the fact that Moses saw this reality and truth hundreds of years before Christ ever came.
Moses, who after leading the people out of Egypt and spent the remainder of his life following God in the dessert, never getting to enter the promised land – the promised earthly home for Gods people. I believe God shaped Moses understanding of home during the 40 years of wandering. Home is not in Egypt. Home is not the promised land. Home is where God is. Home is with God. Do I see this truth today? Do I live by it? Do I see my extended time of drawing near to God as drawing near to my home?
That’s a simple thought that has meant a lot to me today…drawing near to God is drawing near to my home.
That could be a challenging picture for someone with a less than desirable experience of home while growing up. But that’s the beauty of Scripture. It doesn’t leave us to our own experiences or past. Scripture steps in and informs our understanding so that we see what God intends us to see. It’s his way of letting us in on His perspective, His grace, His love, Himself.
Draw near to God. Draw near to our home.
